Storm warnings this weekend – keep your head on a swivel and your car in the garage!

Tonight our old friends The Filter Kings bring their shit-kicking country rock to the Reverb Lounge stage. Drop on by and check out Lee and the boys, and don’t forget your cowboy boots (and hat!). Omaha rockers Garst opens at 9 p.m.

The twang continues at Reverb Saturday night when so-called “insurgent country” artist William Elliot Whitmore headlines. More folk/Americana than country, Whitmore has released albums on a variety of indie labels including Anti-, Southern and Bloodshot. His latest is the self-released Silently, The Mind Breaks. The Filter Kings’ Gerald Lee, Jr., opens at 8 p.m. $20.

Also Saturday night, The Sydney in Benson is hosting Minneapolis artist ET. I’ve looked and looked and can’t find out a single thing about ET, so you’re on your own. Jeff in Leather and Ex-Lover open this 9 p.m. show. $12.

Also, Saturday is Earth Day in Elmwood Park. Like every year, there’s a live music stage. Artists include Bad Self Portraits and Un-Til. Check out the full schedule here.

Sunday night, Polyvinyl artist STRFKR headlines at The Admiral Theater. The band may be best known for their publishing rights deals, having had tracks used on a variety of TV shows (Weeds, The Blacklist, Skins), films (The Fault in Our Stars, 21 & Over), and TV commercials (Target, Apple). You’ve heard their music before; you just didn’t know it was them playing it. Chromatics’ frontwoman Ruth Radelet opens at 8 p.m. $30.

Also Sunday, The Slowdown is hosting an alt-punk show in their main room with bands Strung Out, The Casualties and The Venomous Pinks. $30, 8 p.m.

And that’s all I got. If I missed your show, put it in the comments section. Have a great weekend!

New SAVAK (local boy Mike Jaworski); new Ty Segall, STRFKR, Waxahatchee…

SAVAK on the streets of Brooklyn…

by Tim McMahan, Lazy-i.com

Mike Jaworski, a.k.a. Jaws by those who know him, emailed last week saying his current project – SAVAK — has a new album coming out called Flavors of Paradise on Brooklyn label Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Those of you who were around the Omaha music scene back in the day remember Jaws from his bands Hong Gyn Corp, The Cops, Virgin Islands and Hello from Waveland, as well as his Seattle-based record label Mt. Fuji, which in addition to releasing albums by The Cops dropped records by Omaha indie band Little Brazil.

So yeah, Jaworski is something of a legend who hasn’t lived around here in ages, but is still remembered as an icon.

Anyway, SAVAK is a three piece indie rock band that also includes Sohrab Habibion (ex-Obits, ex-Edsel) and drummer Matt Schulz (ex-Holy Fuck).  Joining them as part of the live version of SAVAK are indie rock veterans Jeff Gensterblum (Small Brown Bike, Her Heads on Fire) and Matt Hunter (New Radiant Storm King, Silver Jews).

The new record was recorded at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio but without Albini and instead with Matthew Barnhart (Superchunk, Bob Mould). “No guests, no edits, no country and definitely no funk—the record is lean, spacious and lively,” says the press release. Undoubtably modern, the record also has some retro touches, among them the Byrds-like harmonies on “Let the Sunlight In” and the ‘70s acid guitar on “The New New Age.” It’s the most tuneful SAVAK album to date and a total gas.

The band will be playing around Brooklyn this spring and have a tour of France slated for April (ah, April in Paris), but no Omaha dates planned (SAVAK would be the perfect fit for the Outlandia Festival!). Preorder the album here

Tuesday appears to be the day when bands announce tours.

Ty Segall is headed back to Omaha May 7 for a gig at The Waiting Room. Yesterday he dropped the final pre-release single from his upcoming full-length, Three Bells, which will be released Jan. 26 on Drag City.

Portland’s STRFKR announced they’ll play at The Admiral Theater April 28. Their new album, Parallel Realms, drops on Polyvinyl March 1.

Indie darlings (and personal favorite) Waxahatchee announced their new album, Tigers Blood, drops March 22 on Anti-. They also announched a slew of 2024 tour dates. Their closest pass to Omaha will be the usual Kansas City, St. Paul, Chicago swing April 18-20. See you on the interstate.

Killers tix on sale today; STRFKR, Kristen Leschper (Mothers), Anna McClellan Sunday…

Kristen Leschper performing as Mothers at Slowdown Jr., March 20, 2018. Leschper plays at Reverb Sunday night.

Feb. 17, 2023 – Remember last Friday when I said, ‘Don’t worry, there’s a lot of great shows next weekend’?  Well, I meant the weekend after next weekend, because there ain’t nothing happening this weekend, until Sunday night.

Before we get to that, tickets to the inaugural concert at Steelhouse Omaha featuring Las Vegas alt rock band The Killers go on sale today at 10 a.m. The folks at Steelhouse are treating this like a contest, posting on social media tips for acquiring the $75 tickets (plus probably +$20 in fees) from Ticketmaster, and stating “Do not purchase from 3rd party vendors.” Well, with no presale code for fans, and if demand is as brisk as they seem to think, there will be plenty of 3rd party vendors selling tickets well above face value. Thus is life.

Steelhouse yesterday also announced their next show, Fleet Foxes July 2, another band that misses the mark for me. I believe the last time they played here was outside of The Waiting Room back in September 2017. Singer/songwriter Uwade will open that show.

Steelhouse invited the media for a sneak peek of the new facility under construction Wednesday. I was unable to make it, but the Omaha World-Herald was there. Check out the article and brief video here. One interesting reveal I wasn’t aware of – in addition to the 3,000 standing capacity (or 1,500 seated), the $104.1 million facility’s balcony will offer seating for up to 300. Judging from the video, it’ll be a race to the May 12 finish line.

OK, back to this weekend. There’s nothing on the indie music radar tonight or Saturday night, but Sunday, two shows of note…

At The Waiting Room, Portland indie band STRFKR headlines. Originally a solo project by Josh Hodges, it’s evolved into a full-on rock band releasing albums on Polyvinyl Records. Their latest single, “Running Around,” marks a return to style after 2020’s Ambient 1 all-instrumental tonal collection. Das Kope opens at 8 p.m. $25.

Meanwhile, right around the corner at Reverb Lounge Sunday night, Kristine Leschper headlines. You might know her by her project’s former name, Mothers, which she is officially retiring with the release of The Opening, Or Closing of a Door, out March 4 on ANTI. The first single from that album is below. Opening for Leschper is Omaha singer/songwriter Anna McClellan, who is worth the price of admission by herself. Sgt Leisure also is on the bill. $15, 8 p.m.

And that’s all I got. If I missed your show, put it in the comments section. Have a great weekend!

Matt Wilson and his Orchestra, STRFKR Saturday; Interpol at The Holland Sunday…

Matt Wilson and his Orchestra play at The Sydney in Benson Saturday night.

by Tim McMahan, Lazy-i.com

It’s usually Saturday nights during Husker season that the clubs are one big wasteland when it comes to rock shows, but this weekend, tonight is the wasteland.

I can’t find any shows worth a shit going on tonight. I suggest heading over to The Brothers and having a cold one while listening to the best jukebox in town (if for no other reason than because they’ll be closed 9/14 through 9/19).

Tomorrow night’s big show, Matt Wilson of Trip Shakespeare and The Twilight Hours fame is bringing his harp and banjo orchestra to The Sydney in Benson. Bokr Tov opens at 9 p.m. $15.

Also Saturday night, Portland indie band STRFKR (Polyvinyl Records) plays at The Waiting Room with Das Kope. 9 p.m. start, $23 tix.

Meanwhile, over at fabulous O’Leaver’s Saturday night, Denver’s In the Whale headlines with The Natural States and Hussies. $5, 9 p.m.

And then Sunday night it’s the big Interpol show at The Holland Performing Arts Center. I’ve seen Interpol a couple times and they never fail to satisfy, however I have to wonder how well they’ll “rock” playing in front of a seated audience in Omaha’s second most prestigious music hall. Opening is our very own See Through Dresses. Tickets are still available at ticketomaha.com ranging between $35 and $47. Start time is 7:30 p.m. Tux optional.

And that’s all I got. If I missed  your show, put it in the comments section. Have a great weekend.

Lots o’ shows going on tonight.

Top of the list is Lydia Loveless at Reverb Lounge. The Columbus, Ohio, singer/songwriter has been compared to Loretta Lynn, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith and Liz Phair, among others. She’s on the road supporting her new album, Somewhere Else (Bloodshot Records). Local hero Kait Berreckman opens. $10, 9 p.m.

Also tonight, Portland electronic act STRFKR (Polyvinyl, Badman) plays at The Waiting Room with Shy Boys & Fullbloods. $17, 9 p.m.

Over at fabulous O’Leaver’s it’s a singer/songwriter showcase featuring Anna McClellan (Howard), Mike Schlesinger (ex-Gus & Call), Phantom Canyon and Noah Sterba (Yuppies). $5, 9:30 p.m.

The Good Living Tour continues in West Point tonight at the Nielsen Community Center featuring Rock Paper Dynamite, John Klemmensen and the Party and Dustin Prinz. It’s free and starts at 8. You think Andy Norman of Hear Nebraska is getting road weary yet?
