Lincoln Calling yesterday announced the line-up for this year’s festival, to be held Sept. 22-24 in venues throughout the downtown Lincoln metroplex, including Duffy’s, Zoo Bar, Bodega’s Alley, 1867 Bar, and the big stages — The Bourbon, the outdoor Night Market and Duffy’s Backlot.

The headliner is Pennsylvania pop-punkers The Menzingers, whose latest, 2020’s From Exile, was released on Epitaph. Other notable touring indie acts include The Velveteers, whose last album, 2021’s Nightmare Daydream, was produced by Dan Auerbach; and surf punk act Together Pangea. Just as interesting is the selection of local talent, which includes David Nance Band, BIB, M34n Str33t, Cat Piss and Uh Oh.

But wait, there’s more. “A second wave of over 20 additional acts… will be announced in July,” says the LC folks. Tix go on sale to the general public Friday for $55 “with a limited quantity available at that price.” When those are gone, tix are $65. And day passes will be sold in July. Hey, just a head’s up if you (literally) didn’t get the memo — that Chvrches show that was originally slated for The Admiral tonight has been moved to The Bourbon in Lincoln. I’m trying to save you a trip down to South Omaha for nothing.

BTW, The Admiral folks have begun posting photos of the newly remodeled space, and it’s looking very nice indeed. Again, will it be ready for Bright Eyes July 2-3?

Well, the College World Series gets underway this week. In addition to making downtown Omaha a cluster, it means that The Slowdown will be essentially “show-less” for the next two weeks. Slowdown’s next scheduled show is Lilly July 1. I don’t begrudge The Slowdown for putting up the beer tents and booking the cover bands for the next two weeks and taking home as much of CWS fans’ disposable income as possible…

I listened to the new Zola Jesus album, Okovi, all morning. Its description doesn’t match its content. I was expecting a very droll, very somber experience. In fact, the record is probably the poppiest, most upbeat thing Rosa Danilova and Co. have done. She reminds me of very early Sinead O’Connor vocally, compositionally; maybe Kate Bush as well. So I was on the fence between going to that show, which has an 8 p.m. start time with two openers (and a cost of $15) and Palm, who is playing right around the corner at Reverb.

Palm’s new album, Shadow Expert, is something of a departure from their 2015 release, Trading Basics, though no less mathy, disjointed, proggy. The songs have a similar jangled urgency but with better central melodies, more focused, more pop. That Palm show also has the benefit of solid openers. Our very own Thick Paint is on the bill — always a good time — along with Brooklyn trio Real Life Buildings.

And the Palm show is a bargain at $12, but that 9 p.m. start time on a school night… See you at Zola.

Also tonight, emo-punk band The Menzingers are playing at Sokol Underground — yes, Sokol Underground. Salt Creek and Centerpiece open. 8 p.m., $20.

Ladyfinger CD release show

Lest we forget, the weekend starts now.

And the biggest show of the weekend is the Ladyfinger record release show at The Waiting Room tonight. I’m told the boys will actually have some CDs on hand for sale in addition to the vinyl. Opening is The Seen, who also are celebrating a CD release, and The Hussies. $8, 9 p.m. See you there, if I can find a place to park…

…Because in case you’ve forgotten, it’s Feb. 1, which means tonight is Benson First Friday. As part of the art walk festivities, Sweatshop Gallery, 2727 No. 67th St. (just south of The Barley Street) is hosting Club No Quiet featuring music by Howard, George Glass, Rock Paper Sisters, Sister Kisser and The Wayward Little Satan Daughters. The fun starts at 8. More info here.

Saturday night Florida “punk” band Hot Water Music plays at The Slowdown with La Dispute and The Menzingers. Hear Nebraska has a Q&A right here with Menzinger Tom May (wonder if he gets confused with former Omaha folk singer Tom May? Something tells me he doesn’t). $20, 8 p.m.
