LA Band Color Green plays at Reverb Monday night.

Get a load of this: The best shows of the weekend are actually next Monday night.

Briefly, there are (again) no touring indie rock shows in Omaha this weekend.

Only one show is worth your attention tonight and it’s in Lincoln: The Speed! Nebraska “Winternationals” showcase at The Zoo Bar, featuring Bad Bad Men, Wagon Blasters and Pagan Athletes. If you’re in the Capitol City, it’s definitely worth your time. $10, 9 p.m.

Tomorrow night (Saturday), Omaha indie band Ojai headlines a free show at fabulous O’Leaver’s. I know very little about this act, other than they’ve been around for a long time. Maybe it’s time I catch their set? Joining them is singer/songwriter Ione (Who also performs around town as Safe Space — I’m not sure why she oscillates between the two names – maybe it has something to do with whomever is accompanying her?). Like I said, FREE, and starts at 9 p.m.

Also Saturday night, local rock band Safari Room plays Reverb Lounge with Bad Self Portraits and Steady Wells. 8 p.m., $18.

Sunday is, of course, St. Patrick’s Day, which just happens to be the lousiest day to have St. Patrick’s Day. i think we need to make a command decision and forever make St. Patrick’s Day the second Friday of March. My usual go-to on this national holiday (for us Irish folk, anyway) has always been The Dubliner, who this year features “three fantastic sets of live Irish music.” The main act on St. Patty’s Day always plays in the afternoon, and this year Lincoln act Out of the House gets that honor from 1 to 5 p.m.

And that’s it for the weekend, so let’s talk about Monday. I generally wait until Monday to tell you about Monday, but considering the lousy weekend, here’s something to look forward to:

Top of the list Monday night is Los Angeles indie band Color Green at Reverb Lounge. The band features Noah Kohll, who has been involved in a number of local indie acts over the years, including Staffers and Nathan Ma. He’s been doing Color Green with Corey Madden for a few years. Their latest is a self-titled album released in 2022 by ORG Music and Aquarium Drunkard that sounds like a modern version of Allman Brothers crossed with The Byrds. Also on the bill are up-and-coming Omaha bands The Dirts and Heavy Clippings (who we saw last weekend at Goatfest). This one’s jam-packed and starts at 8 p.m. $15.

Meanwhile, just down the street Monday night at The Sydney, Atlanta psych/electronic/noise act Chew headlines. Their latest is 2022’s Horses (Stolen Body Records). Opening for Chew is a new LinOma band Size Queen, whose members include Lincoln Calling booker Sam Crisler. I don’t think they’ve played in Omaha before, so consider this their Omaha debut. 8 p.m., $10.

And that’s all I got. If I missed your show, put it in the comments section. Have a great weekend.

Mt. Joy, Pkew Pkew Pkew Saturday; Twin XL, Dicey Riley at The Dubliner Sunday…

Dicey Riley at The Dubliner March 17, 2018. They return to The Dubliner Sunday night for St. Patrick’s Day.

Did you see that Cursive is slated to play at Winchester Bar & Grill May 25? The bar, which is owned by a number of folks including the dudes in Cursive, is doing karaoke and cover bands these days. As far as I can tell, this will be their first indie-style rock show, and will also include mewithoutout and The Appleseed Caste. And it being the last show on the Cursive tour, expect something special…

Anyway, that’s fine, but what’s happening this weekend?

Well, I have zero shows on my radar tonight. Might be a good time to head over to The Brothers or O’Leaver’s and watch some NCAA action.

Tomorrow night (Saturday), LA indie band Mt. Joy plays at The Waiting Room. They’ve got a laid-back style that lies somewhere between yacht rock and Americana. Their self-titled debut came out last year on Dualtone Records. Tulsa’s Wilderado opens at 9 p.m. $15.

Also Saturday night, there’s a five-band skate-punk show at Dr. Jack’s Drinkery, 3012 No. 102nd St., headlined by Pkew Pkew Pkew with On Holiday, Motel Martyr, Liar Wire and Speedball Summer. $12, 8:30 p.m.

Sunday night, Reverb Lounge is hosting LA indie-pop trio Twin XL, with Bokr Tov and Field Club. $10, 8 p.m.

And, lest I forget to mention it, Sunday is St. Patrick’s Day, which means you’ll find me down at The Dubliner listening to Dicey Riley (ex-Turfmen) from 2 to 6 p.m. and then from 7 to 11 p.m.  $5. Save a Guinness for me, won’t you?

That’s all I got this weekend. If I missed your show, put it in the comments section. Have a great weekend.

Killer Blow tonight; Sarah Benck and the Robbers reunion tribute Saturday; Happy St. Patrick’s Sunday…

Here’s your weekend.

Tonight at Slowdown Jr. Killer Blow kicks off a tour that will be taking them to Minneapolis, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, and Springfield MO. The duo of Genie Molkentine on drums and vocals and Todd VonStup on electric guitar has a 3 song CD-EP and a 9-song tape recorded on 4-track they’ll be hocking on the road. Check out a track below. Opening are Coaxed, a band that includes members of Sun Settings and Capgun Coup, who will be joining KB on tour. Also playing tonight is Appleton WI band Arms Aloft, and Sister Kisser, a female-fronted punk band with members from Gag Reflex and Places We Slept. $5, 9 p.m. Go!

Also tonight, Matt Cox Band headlines at O’Leaver’s with The River Monks, Field Club and Brad Hoshaw. $5, 9:30 p.m.

Tomorrow night’s big event is the Gary Flanagan Memorial Tribute Show at The Waiting Room. I never met Flanagan but have been told that he was a long-time supporter of local music, which is obvious considering who’s playing this show: The Whipkey Three, Brad Hoshaw, Midwest Dilemma, Scott Severin, Matt Cox, Liz Webb and a special reunion of Sarah Benck and The Robbers. $5, 8 p.m.

Also Saturday night down at The Barley Street Tavern it’s The Ground Tyrants with Custom Catacombs and Mike Saklar and his band. $5, 9:30 p.m.

St. Patrick’s Day is Sunday, which is a bummer for everyone because it’s Sunday and we all have to go to work the next morning. That said, there’s a plethora of shows Sunday night including G. Love and Special Sauce at The Slowdown with John Fullbright. $22/$25 DOS, 8:30 p.m. The English Beat plays the Waiting Room with The Bishops. $22, 8 p.m. But the place to be might be The Barley Street Tavern, which is hosting a special St. Patrick’s Day bash featuring music from Edge of Arbor, Tara Vaughan Band, Valleytown (Dover, OH), The Decatures, No Triangles, Guilty is the Bear, and more. Their website says it runs 2 to 9 p.m. and costs $5.

As for me, I’ll be drinking my St. Paddy’s pint of Guinness at The Dubliner. See you there.
