Navy Gangs plays tonight at Petshop.

Nik Freitas dropped another single from his upcoming album Day and Dark this morning. The track “Listen” features Maria Taylor of Azure Ray (and solo) fame.

I mention this for two reasons: 1) Day and Dark is easily one of my favorite albums of 2018; and 2) Freitas plays at fabulous O’Leaver’s Saturday night.

So what was that tough choice hinted at yesterday?

Over a Petshop Gallery (the old Sweatshop space) Brooklyn band (with local ties) Navy Gangs headlines tonight. These guys are somewhat awesome and rarely come through town, but to top it off, it’s a stacked show with Falter, David Nance and BiB. It starts at 9:15 and costs $10.

Meanwhile, right up the street at Reverb Lounge, Caroline Rose headlines. You read my review of her latest album, wherein I said “Imagine Alvvays or La Roux but with a darkly wicked sense of humor and a bracingly accurate view of this modern world.” I know a couple people who bought advance tickets fearing it will sell out (which is the only reason to buy advance tickets since they’re about a buck more per when you add in the fees). They may be right. Cardioid opens at 8 p.m. $12.

To top it off, Foster the People is playing at Stir Cove tonight. I’m not sure that show will eat into either of these (though it would be more apt to affect the Caroline Rose gig, imho).

The Faint on Adult Swim’s Stupid Morning Bullshit.

I haven’t neglected you, I’ve just been busy. And it’s tough to adjust to this season that precedes months of ice and cold, months that I despise. I belong in southern California or Key West or the Texas Gulf, not here in the winter-time.

Anyway…

Firstly, David “Doc” Matysiak wrote to tell say that The Faint appeared on Adult Swim’s streaming morning show Stupid Morning Bullshit on Wednesday. Todd, Clark and the guys played improv-style while the hosts rambled on about things like Runzas and ComicCon, plus there were segments like “Paint with the Faint” and “Blazing Saddle Creek.” It’s basically a video podcast featuring a floating shot of The Faint performing throughout.

Matysiak, who we all remember from Coyote Bones and CoCo Art, works on the show as a hands-on producer. Check it out online here.

Conor Oberst on the New York Times’ Facebook Live session.

Yesterday Conor Oberst did a Facebook live session for the great, gray, digital New York Times. The 17-minute video includes a few songs and a Q&A with questions via Facebook.

Among the questions, where’s one of your favorite places to perform? Conor: “There’s this place called O’Leaver’s that is one of my favorite places to play. It’s a dive bar but it has a special place in my heart…” Awww….

Brooklyn by way of Omaha band Navy Gangs has a new EP coming out and it’s sublime, one of the best spins so far this year. Flood online is hosting the first video from the EP and a tour diary (which I can’t find). Check it out. How come none of you told me about these guys before?

Navy Gangs plays tonight at Milk Run.

If Lincoln Calling and the second year of the Good Living Tour (which kicks off this Thursday in the mighty town of Ord, Nebraska) weren’t enough, Hear Nebraska yesterday announced a mega-fundraiser Sept. 24 in Lincoln. They’re calling it Beer Nebraska — five bands and five breweries. And what bands: Cursive, Criteria, Universe Contest, Better Friend and a reunion of Lincoln band Columbia Vs Challenger. The concert takes place all afternoon in the parking lot of Zipline Brewery in Lincoln at 2100 Magnum Cir #1. Tickets are $30 and include entrance fee and three samples per brewery.

Tiny Engines, the imprint that releases music by Omaha’s own See Through Dresses, announced that the band is hitting the road on its summer tour starting July 26 at Lincoln’s Vega when they open for Soul Asylum. Afterward it’s off to Hastings for a stop on the Good Living Tour and then a couple dates with Little Brazil in Kansas. After that, STD will be driving along the East Coast, eventually winding up back in Omaha Aug. 20 for a performance at Maha Music Festival.

The band continues to support their 2015 Tiny Engines debut, End of Days, but has begun recording the follow-up, which is slated for release next spring.
