Sun Kil Moon’s lullaby to War on Drugs; The Paul Collins Beat, Sons of The Slowdown tonight…

Trying to decide what I think about the whole Mark Kozelek / Sun Kil Moon / War on Drugs thing, and realized that I don’t really care. That it’s all fun and games for Kozelek, who doesn’t give a shit what anyone thinks of him. I like both artists. SKM’s Benji album is one of my all-time favorites. War on Drugs most recent album — and concert — will both be on my year-end favorites list. The rest is just white noise.

That said, here’s the link to the infamous “War on Drugs: Suck my Cock” track, which you can also download as an mp3 file from Pitchfork (don’t click on the player on the page, click on the link for the download).

Tonight at Slowdown Jr. Paul Collins of the band The Beat (and The Nerves) headlines, and opening is none other than The Sons of The Slowdown (alone worth the price of admission). 8:30 p.m., $8.

  • My own random thoughts (not that anyone cares):

    a) I fell in love with Red House Painters in the early 90s. It was at least 6-8 years of being a fan before I even saw a photo of Koz and his RHP bandmates. This ‘mysteriousness’ added to the weight of their sad songs, and I miss this kind of approach.

    b) I can relate to Koz as he slowly grows older, less patient, and more curmudgeonly. That being said, he’s taken it too far in this case.

    c) War on Drugs made one of the best albums of the year. And Koz’s assholitude is making a mockery of it and distracting from their success, which I disagree with.

    d) Benji is really not that great of an album. I love the man, and have been a loyal fan forever, but IMHO it has been at least 10 years since he’s put out a truly fantastic album.

    e) Even as Koz makes a total ass out of himself, I at least applaud his willingness to speak his mind honestly and vent his frustrations.

    f) Koz is clearly miserable/slightly mentally unstable at this stage in his life. And that scares me a little.
